This is the Yaesu FTA-550AA - and it makes a great safety radio as apart from the usual comm frequencies it also has the NAV channels so VORs and ILS system can be received and displayed. It's an unusual radio because it comes complete with an empty battery case that you can fit sealed and long life dry cells - Typically Duracels or similar that can remain in the packet for years before they expire. No remembering to charge a normal cell - no good for a backup radio.

You could of course fit a set of rechargeables if you wish - but the idea is to use these on easily available batteries, available everywhere in the world. The YAESU FTA-550 is packed with features, yet very affordable. Boasting an oversize full dot matrix LCD display, the FTA-550 Airband Transceiver provides full communication on the Aircraft communications Band and additionally provides VOR and ILS navigation features on the "NAV" band. The FTA-550 has the capability of storing up to 200 memory channels with a quick and easy channel recall feature.

The brand new easy to operate menu system is icon driven making it simple to navigate through all of the powerful features this transceiver has to offer. The high resolution display makes it easier to view all the great features the FTA-550 has to offer. When the FTA-550 receives a VOR signal, the display will automatically switch to the NAV band screen which shows a CDI based on the received signal. 200 Memory channels with up to 15 Alphanumeric characters.

The FTA-550 can store up to 200 Memory channels for quick and easy retrieval. With the capability of using up to 15 Alphanumeric characters per name the FTA-550 allows for a better channel description.

Aviation Radio - The Basics. The Civil Aviation aircraft band is split into two segments. Air to Air and Air to Ground communications are in the 118.00-136.975MHz range and are divided into channels each 8.33KHz wide since 2018.

Before this, the divisions were wider, meaning in some busier areas, the available channels were full. Changing the entire system, world wide was done and now more frequencies are available. The downside to this is that radio equipment produced for the old system does not have the ability to tune the correct frequencies and each country require aviators to only use new equipment. While the aircraft fitted radios got changed as a priority, many pilots want a backup that can be kept for emergencies of convenience. The other part of the band, from 108.00MHz to 117.95MHz is used for navigation aids, in particular the VOR system where ground based beacons broadcast their location, and suitably equipped radios can receive these signals and display them in a compass style.

Not all radios feature the navigation capability - our FTA-550AA is designed to run on ordinary AA cells, so ideal for emergency use and it features both VOR and ILS capability. The FTA-250L does not feature the navigation aids and comes with rechargeable batteries for general communications use.
